WISDOM FOR ALL TIMES, WISDOM
FOR OUR TIMES
This is a bimonthly newsletter promoting wisdom within
our culture.
This newsletter is presented by Geoff Woods, Certified
Life Coach and Founder of The Institute of Wisdom and Courage.
Hello
everyone. This is my first newsletter, the sole purpose of which is to promote
wisdom within our culture. I think the pursuit of wisdom used to be part of our
culture, but unfortunately, that pursuit exists no longer. I also believe
wisdom is desperately needed; I know I need wisdom in my life! Do you need
wisdom in yours?
My
desire is to promote wisdom through this newsletter by discussing the
following: the nature of wisdom; obtaining, maintaining and maturing in wisdom;
and the benefits of wisdom. I also want to discuss why the pursuit of wisdom is
no longer popular within our culture today. Lastly, I want to share my personal
journey in finding and applying wisdom in my life and experiencing its
benefits.
LetŐs
get down to business and first discuss the nature of wisdom. I am using the
following excerpt from The Book of Wisdom, thought to be written by King
Solomon about three thousand years ago. The author discusses topics that I
think are relevant today. He discusses the nature of wisdom, its importance,
and how one might find it. Please read this thoughtfully.
The
Nature of Wisdom
There is in her a spirit
that is intelligent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, clear, unpolluted,
distinct, invulnerable, loving the good, keen, irresistible, beneficent,
humane, steadfast, sure, free from anxiety, all-powerful, overseeing all, and
penetrating through all spirits that are intelligent, pure, and altogether
subtle. For wisdom is more mobile than any motion; because of her pureness she
pervades and penetrates all things.
Book of Wisdom 7:22-24
This
description of wisdom has existed for many centuries, and it had meaning and
relevance during the authorŐs time. Since wisdom does not change, does it not
have meaning and relevance for our time? What do you think?
The
author describes wisdom with powerful, meaningful adjectives and phrases. These
adjectives and phrases characterize his thoughts on the nature of wisdom. Which of these characteristics of wisdom
resonate with you? Do you possess any of these in your life presently? Are
there any of these that you do not have, but want? If so, why do you want them?
Take a moment to write down your thoughts.
One
characteristic of wisdom that resonates with me is to love that which is good.
To be honest, loving the good is not easy for me. In my past, I have not always
had the clarity of mind to differentiate between what is good and what is bad
or destructive. I made some decisions in my past thinking and believing they
would lead to goodness, but regrettably, they did not. However, I have
experienced loving and pursuing that which is good, and this love and pursuit
has brought me great happiness, joy, and peace.
Ways
to Communicate With Me
The nature of wisdom is worth thinking
about. It is deserving of our thoughts, and then of our actions. If you find yourself thinking about
wisdom or being surprised by wisdom, write to me and let me know your thoughts and experiences.
